Quarq

KNOW YOUR POWERS

Quarq power meters are for athletes devoted to honing their craft. Delivering statistics to help you know exactly what’s going on. But not just statistics. The context to help go beyond the guess. To get beyond the uncertainty of whether your mood or emotion is calling the shots. So you can know exactly when to push, when to sit up, and when to dig deeper.

Jim and Mieke Meyer, Quarq’s founders, moved to Australia in 2006 for her to work on an MBA and him to focus on triathlon. Jim wanted a power meter for training but couldn’t find one that fit his needs or budget. So, with his background in mathematics and passion for tinkering, he decided to start his own power meter company. As a result, Quarq – a hip misspelling of the word quark, which is a fast-moving subatomic particle – was founded.

The next year Quarq established its factory in Jim’s hometown of Spearfish, S.D., and demonstrated prototype power meters at InterBike trade show in Las Vegas. In June 2008, the company shipped its first power meter. The Quarq CinQo pioneered the tool free replaceable battery and was one of the first power meters with ANT+™ wireless communication. In 2009, Quarq replaced the CinQo with the CinQo Saturn – named for the ring of Saturn that encircled the power meter spider’s arms. Under an agreement with SRAM, the CinQo Saturn was also fitted to SRAM’s S900 crankset and marketed worldwide as the SRAM S975.

Fast forward to May 2011, when Jim and Mieke Meyer officially signed the papers that would make Quarq part of SRAM LLC. When the pen was lifted, Jim reached into his backpack and handed over a previously secret power meter prototype, which was a complete departure from previous designs. SRAM’s expertise in drivetrain engineering helped deliver the groundbreaking SRAM RED Quarq Power Meter, which remains the first and only power meter in a groupset.

Introduced in February 2012, the SRAM RED Quarq Power Meter featured lighter weight, a lower profile and +/- 1.5% accuracy, and introduced the CR2032 battery, LED, visible ANT+™ ID, Power Balance™ and Omnical™. The RED power meter and a close relative, the Quarq for Specialized Power Meter, would help power victories in the world’s top cycling and triathlon events including the Elite Men’s Time Trial and Team Time Trial at the 2012 UCI Road World Championships and Pete Jacobs’ runaway victory at the 2012 at Ironman® World Championship in Hawaii.

Constant progress continued in 2013 and 2014 with products such as the Shimano®-compatible ELSA RS and SRAM XX1 1X mountain bike power meters and wins across the globe. In 2014 Quarq power meters delivered four elite world championships – in road cycling, cyclo-cross and IRONMAN® triathlon.

Nowadays power is an essential tool for pros as well as thousands of riders seeking to reach their potential in training, races, centuries or ‘sportive events. Quarq remains at the forefront of power meter design and manufacturing, making accurate, reliable and easy to use power meters for devoted athletes in every cycling discipline.
